Jan recently directed MACBETH for Richmond Shakespeare; MARAT/SADE at Theater 54 (Off-Off Broadway); and THE TAMING OF THE SHREW at Kingsmen Shakespeare in Los Angeles.


The former Artistic Director of the Lake Tahoe Shakespeare Festival, Founding Artistic Director of the Tygres Heart Shakespeare Company resident in the Portland Center for the Performing Arts, and past president of the Shakespeare Theatre Association, she has directed the entire canon of Shakespeare’s histories.


Regional theatre direction includes productions for the American Shakespeare Center, Mendocino Shakespeare Festival, San Francisco Shakespeare Festival, Boston’s Stoneham Theatre, Nevada Repertory Theatre, Artists Repertory Theatre, Chamber Opera Oregon, Stark Raving Theatre, Portland Baroque Orchestra, and Third Angle New Music Ensemble.


Jan has been an executive coach for over twenty-five years, working with business professionals of all kinds, ranging from public relations experts to board chairs, executive directors, ministers, and politicians. Developing substance, confidence, and polished effectiveness in her clients, she coaches technique and strategy for many types of professional interactions, including keynote speeches, one-on-one meetings, solo and team presentations, political speech, lectures, media techniques, sermons and ceremonies, social networking, and business start-ups.


She holds a Masters from Reed College and the PhD from the University of Oregon, where her dissertation was on theatrical editing of Shakespearean texts. Her professional theatre training was at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art (London), Lee Strasberg Theatre Institute (L.A.), and Shakespeare & Company (Lenox, MA).  


In the Portland, Oregon community where she is based, Jan has served as president and/or co-founder of organizations including the Portland Area Theatre Alliance, ArtNet, and the Ellen Faull Gordon NW Opera Center.   She has served on numerous advisory boards and committees including the Northwest Business Committee for the Arts, Regional Arts and Culture Council, Metropolitan Arts Commission, ArtsPlan2000. As a member of the Portland City Club, she was responsible for the "Moment for Art" broadcast. She served on the admissions advisory panel at Reed College, and was the originator and organizer of the Cerf Amphitheater reconstruction there.
